The VFS-KPU Degree Pathway

 

Vancouver Film School (VFS) and Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) have partnered to deliver a cross-institutional pathway enabling VFS Writing for Film, Television & Games graduates to complete a Kwantlen Polytechnic University Bachelor of Arts Degree, Major in Creative Writing, or Major in General Studies in as little as 3 years when studying full time. This pathway offers VFS Writing grads the opportunity to combine their industry-focused writing training in Film, Television and Games with KPU’s expansive course offerings on the writing craft, including screenwriting, fiction, poetry, stage drama, as well as new and evolving forms.

About Kwantlen Polytechnic University

As Canada’s only polytechnic university, KPU’s programs focus on hands-on skills, in addition to traditional academics. KPU has five campuses across Metro Vancouver including Richmond, Langley, Cloverdale, Surrey, and Civic Plaza (in Surrey Central). With a focus on teaching and student-centered learning environment, KPU offers over 140 diverse degree, diploma, certificate, and citation programs. You can apply to the Bachelor of Arts, Major in General Studies or the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Creative Writing for entry in Fall (September), Spring (January) and Summer (May) each year.  Applicants are encouraged to apply early.

Applicants must meet KPU’s English Proficiency requirements, which can be found here.

  • Yes, completion of a diploma at VFS will satisfy KPU’s English proficiency requirement. 

Vancouver Film School Students completing the Writing for Film, Television & Games Diploma program will receive up to 60 transfer credits to apply towards the Bachelor of Arts, Major in General Studies or the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Creative Writing degree programs at KPU. Transfer credits may also apply towards other programs at KPU depending on the university program selected.

  • 60 credits is equivalent to two full time years of study.

Courses from the Bachelor of Arts, Major in General Studies or the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Creative Writing degree programs are typically offered on both the Surrey and Richmond campuses. However, the majority of the courses are offered on the Surrey campus.

A Bachelor’s Degree is four years; however, graduates from the Writing for Film, Television & Games Diploma program will start in the third year of the two eligible degree programs at KPU.

Both of these programs are open intake, which means a bigger program capacity and three intakes in a year. Students are encouraged to apply early for their desired intake. The average class size is 35.

If you are an international student, you can work up to 20 hours per week during your regular full-time semesters.

If you are an international student, as long as you have complied with all IRCC rules and regulations, completion of a Bachelor’s Degree at KPU should make you eligible for a post-graduate work permit.
